Chinese fishermen deny illegal fishing here

THE CAPTAINS of two long line fishing vessels accused of fishing illegally in the Solomon Islands water denied the allegation at the Magistrate Court Wednesday this week. 

Lin Yi and Li Er pleaded not guilty to a charge of A Foreign Long Line Fishing Vessel fishing in the Solomon Islands without a valid Foreign Fishing Vessel License.

Yi also pleaded not guilty to a second charge of Stowage of Fishing Gear by Foreign Fishing Vessel. 

The charges are under the Fisheries Act 1998. 

Principal Magistrate Stephen Wilson adjourned the matter to April 8 to set trial dates. 

Prosecution told court yesterday it has five witnesses for the trial.

The defense counsel is yet to confirm its number of witnesses. 

Claudina Habru from Global Lawyers is representing the accused. 

Bail for the accused was extended.
